A Semi-Professional Introduction

What is SemiPro Tech+Gear? Why would I get information from a Semi-Professional? Both valid questions.

My name is Jeff. I’m a content creator and WFH professional. I’m starting the SemiPro Tech+Gear YouTube channel and blog to share information that I believe will be helpful for other content creators and WFH pros. Why? I. LOVE. GEAR. I could talk about audio gear, video gear, keyboards, monitors, and tech gadgets all day every day. On my primary YouTube channel and podcast (POD Insights) I share information about a side hustle that I’ve had since 2020: selling print on demand products online. That project has led me to the realization that I love talking about the gear I’m using to create content as much as I enjoy sharing the content. While I most definitely don’t have the time to do it (who does these days?), that passion for gear has led me to start a second channel.

So why “SemiPro”? Because I don’t consider myself to be a professional in the spaces of audio engineering (or any engineering), videography, or any disciplines you can get formal education in that are related to content creation. At the same time, when I’m around information about audio interfaces, microphones, mechanical keyboards, cameras, or other tech gear, I become a sponge and soak up as much information as I can in a relatively short amount of time. Does that make me an expert or professional in these fields? Of course not. Hence: SemiPro.

I’ve also had a WFH job since 2019, and in the last few years I’ve enjoyed improving my setup, mostly in the audio space. I enjoy being that person on work video calls who gets the “how do you sound so good?” comments. I also enjoy tech gadgets that help improve my daily work experience and of course, my mechanical keyboards and no I do not have to many. Yes I know you can’t use more than one at the same time but I need them all.

My goal with SemiPro Tech+Gear is to share foundational information and helpful tips with other content creators and WFH pros. Collecting way too much gear also makes it possible for me to do product comparisons and tests and I hope to make some comparison videos that I haven’t been able to find myself when I looked for them.

Here’s a little bit more about my relevant experience:

  • POD Insights YouTube channel and podcast creator. Since 2021 I’ve handled all video and audio aspects of the channel and podcast. In 2022 I made significant investments in both gear and time to improve the quality of my videos – because oof my early ones were rough.
  • Work From Home professional since 2019. I use a pretty standard windows laptop/dock/dual monitor setup for my 9-5 job, but of course I’ve made some improvements to my audio setup. I also love testing out new keyboards and other gear to help improve my daily work experience.
  • Small amount of voiceover work experience in audiobooks and explainer videos – I haven’t had enough time to get into this more, but love it because I get to spend more time with my audio gear. I’ll take any excuse to use a tube microphone and external preamps.
  • Lifetime gear nerd.

Here’s to sharing some semi-professional help with others who share my love of all forms of gear!

-Jeff
