In the world of gaming peripherals, finding the perfect keyboard that combines gaming performance with everyday usability can be a challenge. Enter the ASUS ROG Falchion RX, a compact and low-profile keyboard designed to meet the needs of both gamers and everyday users. In this review, we will take a closer look at the features of the Falchion RX and see how it successfully blends gaming performance with practical functionality.

Features and Specifications

The ASUS ROG Falchion RX stands out in the market for its unique features, including optical switches, multi-point wireless connectivity, and compatibility with both Windows and Mac operating systems. Its compact 65 percent layout and aluminum construction make it a solid choice for users looking for a premium gaming keyboard.

The Falchion RX boasts impressive specifications, with two layers of silicone foam for sound dampening, three typing angles, and multi-function touch controls for volume and backlight adjustments. The ASUS ROG optical low-profile switches offer a satisfying typing experience, with 1mm pre-travel and 40g actuation force. It’s a good thing they are enjoyable to type on for everyday use because they are soldered (not hot-swappable). The keycaps are ABS, however ASUS states they have a special UV coating to help prevent dreaded shine. They feel quality and the shine-through legends are easy to see in the dark even on the lowest backlight setting. One downside is that the keycaps & switches utilize a proprietary 4-point connection in the corners of the switch, rather than MX. This means you cannot easily swap the keycaps, either to replace them due to wear or simply to update the color scheme. That’s a bummer.

There is Bluetooth connectivity for up to three devices, 2.4GHz wireless with a 1000Hz polling rate, and USB-C wired connection. The 2.4GHz receiver can by synced with multiple ASUS products, saving USB ports for other devices. The battery life is very impressive: with all the lighting off, the Falchion RX can get over 400 hours of use time, which is well above much of the competition in the low profile mechanical keyboard space. The NuPhy Air75 V2, by comparison, gets about half the use time with lighting off at 220hrs. The battery level can be checked by a Fn command that lights up across the number row which is a neat feature.

One of the key highlights of the Falchion RX is its customization options. With the Armoury Crate software, users can remap keys, add macros, and personalize lighting effects. And importantly, there is onboard memory to save custom profiles (up to six), so your customizations are retained in the keyboard rather than relying on the software. Even after switching devices, your settings are retained. While QMK firmware is my preferred vehicle for customization, this is pretty good for a gaming-centric keyboard.

Is the Falchion RX Worth It?

While the Falchion RX offers a blend of gaming performance and practical features, it may not be the perfect fit for everyone. Priced at $169.99, the keyboard competes with other options like the Keychron K3 Max and NuPhy Air series, each offering unique advantages as well as QMK firmware, high polling rates and 2.4GHz wireless. Ultimately, the decision to invest in the Falchion RX depends on individual preferences and priorities.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, the ASUS ROG Falchion RX is a versatile keyboard that caters to a wide range of users, from gamers to professionals. With its innovative features, solid build quality, and impressive battery life, the Falchion RX is a compelling option for those seeking a compact yet powerful keyboard. Whether you prioritize gaming performance, customization options, or portability, the Falchion RX delivers on multiple fronts, making it a worthy addition to your setup.
